File Extension PPS

File extension: PPS or .pps

Author of the .pps file extension: Microsoft Corporation

Category: Application file

Programs that use the .pps file type: Microsoft PowerPoint, Personal Producer Storyboard, and ERSI's ArcView GIS and Mapping Software

Explanation of .pps file extensions:

The .pps file extension is most often used for Microsoft PowerPoint slideshows. In order to watch a PowerPoint presentation, you must either have Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your system or the PowerPoint viewer.

Typical problems associated with the .pps file extension:

One of the most common problems with .pps files is not having a viewer installed on your system. While some PowerPoint slideshows are packaged with a viewer, others are not. When you receive a .pps file that does not have the viewer bundled with it and you have neither PowerPoint nor a viewer, you will not be able to watch it.

Since .pps files are commonly downloaded from the Internet and forwarded via e-mail, another problem associated with the .pps file extension involves spyware and computer viruses. File corruption and missing file associations are also common .pps problems.

Solutions/Recommendations:

Go to Microsoft's Office website and either update your version of PowerPoint with the latest patches or download the free viewer. If you have the latest copy of PowerPoint viewer installed but a .pps file won't open, it's possible that you do not have a program associated with the .pps file extension. Go into Windows Explorer and find the .pps file that you want to open. Right click it. Choose 'open with' from the list. Select either Microsoft PowerPoint or the PowerPoint reader from the list. Check the box that says, 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.'

Other suites such as OpenOffice.org or WordPerfect X3 are capable of opening .pps files. OpenOffice.org is a free suite of tools that are very similar to Microsoft Office products but without the price tag. OpenOffice.org Impress is the counterpart to PowerPoint.

Because of the risk of spyware and computer viruses with unexpected .pps attachments, make sure to scan your files with a anti-virus and anti-spyware program before opening them.
